So, you are a vet, you must love animals?
7th April 2019So, people have commented to me many times, “So, you are a vet, you must love animals!”
I have pondered on this topic for a while and yes, it’s true that I love animals or I would not be in this profession but is that all there is to it? Loving animals? I feel more is needed to be a vet. Many would also cite the usual cliché that animals are nicer than humans and that is why they chose to work with animals rather than humans.
I have many counterparts who have pursued other careers instead of being a practising vet or left the profession completely. The usual reasons cited are usually being tired of dealing with customers and compassion fatigue, etc. They are good people. I know them personally. So why did they give up vetting?
More importantly, I found myself asking, “Why have I always enjoyed vetting and still love vetting immensely?” I mean, I am not just saying it. I truly relish this profession, enough to leave my home in Singapore, continue to hone my craft and even opening a practice in a foreign country!
My answer is clear. My reason to why I vet daily is not because I love animals. My reason is because I desire to improve the bond between the owner and the pet. It is such a noble profession rich in history and culture. It is a true privilege to be able to perform this duty. There is something sacred, unique and precious about the connection between each pet and their owner.
That is the secret to my energy. As much as I love animals, I love humans too. That is why I left Singapore to pursue the qualification of my dreams, continue to hone my craft in improving myself and have set up Amity to further service the sacred bond between your pet and you.
It can be argued that all businesses and jobs are about human relationships. From a baker to a cobbler, a nail salon to a law firm, a construction site to a web design company, it is all about relationships. So if a person is in the animal industry because they like animals only and not people, I suspect they may struggle.
What sort of industry do you work in? I truly wish you love your chosen path as much as I do! Comment below with your thoughts! Happy Sunday!
