Pet Ownership…
19th May 2019A responsibility filled with huge physical, mental, financial and emotional demands. As many have described, it is like having a child. Vast amount of time, effort and energy is needed. We have heard of pet owners who have sacrificed travelling because of their pet. We also know some friends who have cars specially fitted for their dogs. What about the couple that had converted their house into a rehabilitation unit and dedicated their lives saving wild birds that are brought in to them just for the chance that they might be released in the wild again?
There are countless stories of people going out of their way for animals. Some are kept as pets and some are viewed as ‘temporary’ pets before releasing them back to nature.
Why do people do that? Does it make them happy? Do they feel obliged? Does it give them a sense of purpose? Does it make them feel good inside? Is it the right thing to do?
Everyone has their reason for doing so. Perhaps it is the higher intellect that allows us to show compassion. Perhaps it is hard wired in some of our DNA (we know not everyone feels the same about animals). Perhaps we find the comfort in non-human companionship being less complicated and unconditional. Maybe the way the animals treat us makes us feel good (who can resist a happy dog that wants to play or a cat rubbing her back on your legs or a ferret that snuggles up to you?!).
I feel we should be grateful for animals that have made such difference in our lives. We can all be rich if we are grateful for simple but deep connections like this. After all, it has been said that the best things in life has fleas…
