Easter Sunday is celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ

21st April 2019

This reminds me of a story when my work colleague called me urgently from a consultation as the parrot he was anaesthetising had stopped breathing and a heartbeat could not be found. It was having xrays taken as part of an investigation for weight loss. I remembered running to the xray room and immediately performing CPR. After about 5 minutes, that little bird decided to breathe again, allowing us to breathe as well! We were extremely grateful that day, especially my colleague that the bird lived to tell the tale.

It made me reflect on what we do on a daily basis when we perform a general anaesthetic. We are really doing something incredible by putting an animal to sleep (figuratively), performing the necessary procedure and bringing them back to consciousness again. If you really think about the implications of it, it is quite marvellous. I applaud all vets, nurses, assistants and anyone who have the privilege to perform such an act. It is really quite cool.

Each anaesthetic is unique and different. Every anaesthetic carries its own risk. I commend each and every person in this profession who takes the responsibility and the risk to do what is needed for their patient in this job. Not many people have the grit to take this responsibility and accept the risk. WE ROCK! YOU ROCK! Here is to the people who don the cape and do what is required of them.

Wishing you a fabulous Easter!
