Professional vs Professionalism
28th April 2019Is there a difference? If so, what is it? Is there one that is more important?
Being an infantry officer in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), it was one of the seven core values of the Officer Cadet School (OCS) that we recited at least three times daily. We demonstrated professionalism daily in our thoughts and our deeds. We were taught it was important to lead by example, being on time, doing your best in your ability and being able to use our training.
At Amity, we firmly believe the key to Quality and Efficiency is professionalism. Everyone has a different part to play in this practice, no one part or job is more important than the other. Not only is it important that our team undergo meticulous and detailed training from experts and professionals, it is even more crucial that we exhibit the PERSONALITY and BEHAVIOUR that allows them to perform their job the best way they can.
I feel this is where the difference lies. Professionalism is an expression. It is something that can be seen or felt whereas a professional is someone who has attained certain level of certification and/or belonging to a profession.
Being a professional does not mean he or she would exhibit professionalism. Do you know someone who is a professional and do not show professionalism?
Vice versa, you do not have to be a professional to exhibit professionalism. ANYONE is capable of exhibiting professionalism by displaying the desired personality and behaviour that would allow them to perform their job the best way they can.
So, which do you think is more important? Comment below your thoughts and any examples you can think of that are related to PROFESSIONAL vs PROFESSIONALISM.
